Just as Haus had been about to leave him, Schmalch heard the trick door scrape open. He wound into the tiniest, most compact ball he could manage and hid beneath the closet desk. He didn’t even breathe, just watched, unblinking, from his hiding spot.

He liked the big karju. He really hoped these things wouldn’t call him food, too.

“What in the Worn Book?” Haus murmured.

First, the big man’s thick legs backpedaled past. Next came two more pairs of legs, naked and brilliantly white. One set worked normally, the other bent backward at the knee like some animal.

Tears blurred Schmalch’s vision. He wanted to close his eyes, pretend it was all over, but he couldn’t. He had to watch.

“C’mon,” Haus growled.

The wrong-legged one scrooched down. Schmalch saw jutting hipbones, ribs like a thumb piano, sagging balls. It sprung. He heard a struggle, the grunting of effort, the thwap of flesh striking flesh, but no calls for help. When Haus yelped, Schmalch bit his tongue to keep from screaming.

When the last set of legs ran toward the fight, Schmalch knew it was time to get gone. He leaned out of his cubby. In the bedroom, Haus and the white man-thing with the wrong legs were rolling around on the floor. A similarly pale lady-thing was kicking and throwing clocks and stuffed animals at them. The hullabaloo blocked Schmalch’s exit through the bedroom. That left only one choice, and not one he liked.

Schmalch slipped from his hiding spot and crept through the monster’s door, into the dingy white room, and wound down the spiral stairs.
